Kietz in Köpenick

Berliners call their residential neighborhood “Kiez”. The term actually derives from an ancient settlement, as they can still be marveled at in Berlin-Köpenick nowadays.

The German term “Kiez” (neighborhood) for a residential area actually comes from the word “Kietz”, which formerly was a small fishing village. Such a Berlin “Urkietz” is tucked away in the middle of Köpenick. Small houses with craft and fish symbols on their facades line up next to each other here.

After a winter walk through the district visitors can perfectly relax overlooking the frozen Spree in the cozy Kietz-café. In June the “Kietz Summer” lures with concerts, a lovely street parade and a handcraft market.
