A sandpit, a slide, done: that is what most playgrounds in Berlin look like when you pass them on the school run. The city has better ones. Scattered across all twelve districts sit places that actually commit to an idea, with climbing frames built from raw tree trunks, dragons with a slide for a neck, cable runways across the sand and water channels that keep children busy damming and redirecting all summer. Some hide inside residential blocks, others belong to the big parks. None of them charge admission, most stay open around the clock, and the district parks departments look after them better than their reputation suggests. So which ones are worth crossing town for?
For this list we tested slides, climbed rope nets and looked for the spots where parents can sit down without losing sight of anyone. In Kreuzberg the playground at Park am Gleisdreieck spreads across the grounds of the former Anhalter freight yard, in Wedding the one on Zeppelinplatz sits as a green island between apartment blocks, and in Steglitz children play by the Bäketeich at the Dschungel-Spielplatz among timber frames and water. A good playground, to me, is the one where children run off on their own and the grown-ups can still relax. For this list I looked at what actually carries an afternoon: equipment that still challenges school-age children, a separate corner for toddlers, shade in the afternoon, clean sand, and benches with a view of everything. What came out of it are ten places across the city that are worth the trip.
Where Little Red Riding Hood meets Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel look out from the climbing frame: The Fairy Tale Playground in Schulenburgpark in Neukölln is Berlin's most magical adventure playground, designed around the world of the Brothers Grimm. Imagination and the urge to move are brought together here on a generous area.
Hidden in the middle of Bäkepark in Steglitz is one of Berlin's most beautiful playgrounds: around 3,000 square meters of Africa and adventure, right by the Teltow Canal. Wooden giraffes, zebras, and palm trees create a jungle atmosphere, while climbing towers, zip lines, and hammocks do the rest.
Gleisdreieck Park in Kreuzberg is more than just a playground. Multiple play areas, a nature exploration space, and the legendary 'Stangenwald' (pole forest) make this expansive green area one of the most versatile play spaces in the city.
Hidden in the Brussels neighborhood of Wedding is one of Berlin's most versatile green spaces with a playground that appeals equally to children of various age groups: water play, climbing courses, and hammocks on a sunbathing lawn make Zeppelinplatz a true neighborhood meeting point.
One of Berlin's most imaginative playgrounds awaits in Volkspark Friedrichshain, right on the border with Prenzlauer Berg. Tipis, totem poles, and wobbly bridges transform this expansive adventure playground into a world of its own. Both young and old will find their territory here.
