I don't need a big stage, I need closeness to the music. At the Quasimodo I heard jazz that got under my skin, and at the ARTlinersBerlin I simply swayed along in a neighborly way. For this list I spent my evenings where music is still played live in Berlin. These ten bars made me come back.
Deep beneath the Delphi Filmpalast on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg lies one of Berlin's oldest and most renowned jazz clubs. Since 1975, Quasimodo has been an institution in the live music scene, entertaining its basement audience with jazz, soul, funk, and much more.
Since 1992, A-Trane on Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg has been Berlin's most important address for international jazz. In a venue with just 100 seats, greats like Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, and Wynton Marsalis have played here. Small, intimate, uncompromisingly good.
