For me, a restaurant with a fireplace has to be more than a fire for decoration. I paid attention to whether you really get some of the warmth from your table, whether the fire actually crackles and the atmosphere is coherent. The kitchen counts too: on cold evenings I want something hearty on the plate and a spot where you do not want to move for hours.
Deep in Grunewald, in the Dahlem district, the Châlet Suisse is hidden behind old pines and deciduous trees. This rustic wooden house combines Swiss mountain romance with Berlin forest air, and anyone who has once taken a seat by the crackling fireplace knows why this restaurant has been attracting regulars for decades.
In Wedding, at Prinzenallee 58, Kamine & Wein is arguably Berlin's warmest concept: a specialist stove retailer with an attached wine bar, where up to five stoves burn simultaneously. Drinking wine while real fireplaces crackle all around – this is unique in the city.
