For the marriage-proposal spots, I looked for backdrops that truly make the moment grand, whether romantic, adventurous or quite intimate. It was important to me to have something for every type: the classic with candlelight, the adventure above the rooftops and the quiet retreat in nature. That way every couple finds the right setting for their yes.
Behind the sandstone facade in Grunewald are high-ceilinged rooms with stucco, crystal chandeliers, and heavy fabrics, surrounded by a park where the city completely disappears. For a marriage proposal, you don't really need to stage anything here; the setting takes care of it itself. And if you don't want the moment to end with the journey home, simply stay overnight.
The Grand Orangery is located in the west wing of Charlottenburg Palace, directly by the baroque garden. High windows, chandeliers, parquet flooring - originally, the citrus trees of the Prussian kings overwintered here; today, string quartets perform in the two halls. For a marriage proposal, this means: you arrive as a concert guest and leave as a fiancée.
A few minutes by ferry, and Berlin is gone. Peacock Island in the Havel is car-free, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and can only be reached by boat. 43 hectares, 22,000 plant species, and fifteen show greenhouses between Dahlem and Lichterfelde: The Botanical Garden is large enough to get lost in, and that's precisely what makes it so suitable for a marriage proposal. The Great Tropical House from 1907 provides the backdrop, and the Italian Garden offers the tranquility.
Since 1865, one of Berlin's last two working windmills has been turning on Buckower Damm. Next to it stands the reconstructed miller's house with a restaurant and a beer garden for 400 people. If you prefer a down-to-earth marriage proposal over a high-gloss one, you'll hardly find a more suitable place in Neukölln.

Anyone looking for a backdrop for a marriage proposal that doesn't look like Berlin will find it here, behind the next moon gate.
At Checkpoint Charlie, a helium-filled balloon is attached to a steel cable, ascending 150 meters high, enough to view the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Potsdamer Platz, and TV Tower all at once. The ride lasts just under a quarter of an hour. If you don't want to share the gondola, request an exclusive ascent and float over the city as a couple.
The agency on Schreinerstraße in Friedrichshain does nothing but stage marriage proposals: location, sequence, timing, chauffeur. All reservations are made in the client's name so that on the evening itself, no one notices that someone else helped plan. Packages range from an arranged dinner to a museum opened exclusively for one couple.
Wilmersdorf's oldest cinema opened in 1913 as Roland Lichtspiele and survived the war almost unscathed. What remains is a single auditorium with 250 seats, a colorful facade from the fifties, and the neon sign above it. For a marriage proposal, a cinema has a tangible advantage: you know exactly when it will get dark beforehand.
