Beneath the field of stelae of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe lies the "Place of Information", an underground exhibition covering approximately 800 square meters. It tells the stories of people, families, and places of persecution, and admission is free.

Exhibition beneath the Holocaust Memorial: the Place of Information

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, located between the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz, was opened in 2005 and built according to a design by architect Peter Eisenman. The field of stelae covers approximately 19,000 square meters, with concrete blocks up to 4.7 meters high. Many visitors walk through the pathways without knowing that an exhibition lies beneath their feet.

The Place of Information is accessible via stairs or an elevator and offers approximately 800 square meters of exhibition space. The ceiling adopts the grid of the stelae, continuing the architecture from above into the interior. There is a security check at the entrance; larger luggage is not allowed, and the cloakroom is free of charge.

Room of Names and Room of Families

The exhibition is divided into several rooms. In the Room of Dimensions, diary pages, letters, and last messages from persecuted individuals are displayed on the floor. The Room of Families illustrates, through individual Jewish families, how diverse their lives were before persecution. In the Room of Names, names and short biographies of murdered individuals are read aloud sequentially, and the Room of Places leads to the sites of extermination across Europe.

One should plan about an hour for the exhibition, or about an hour and a half with an audio guide. The audio guide costs 3 Euros and is available in many languages; public guided tours are free. Groups can book tours in over ten languages, including Easy Language. Admission is free.
