For me, an American diner has to do both: serve up a proper spread and transport me to another time. For this list I paid attention to juicy burgers and steaks, to crispy sides like onion rings and fries, but also to the trimmings: chrome, red upholstery, loud music. And the milkshake has to be creamy, otherwise the whole picture is not right for me.
The American Western Saloon is the only American diner in Berlin with its own Jack Daniel's exhibition: Over 600 exhibits are displayed in showcases and on the walls. Located in the basement of the Fontane House in Reinickendorf, it offers 180 seats, a stage for country bands, and a 50-square-meter dance floor for line dance classes.
The Bird at Falkplatz is the American Diner in Berlin for everyone who doesn't want to eat their burger with a knife and fork. Each patty weighs 250 grams, consists of regionally sourced beef freshly ground in the morning, and comes in an English muffin. The steaks are 30-day dry-aged US Black Angus from Creekstone Farms, with salad and cucumber served alongside.
The Route 66 Diner in Wilmersdorf is Berlin's largest American Diner: over 600 seats on two floors, plus a terrace for more than 400 guests. The dry-aged beef for the patties is freshly minced every morning at six o'clock and grilled on a lava stone grill. Jukeboxes, old gas pumps, and red benches provide the backdrop.
The Mitte location of the Sixties Diner is the most central American diner in Berlin: It's a two-minute walk from the Monbijouplatz tram stop, and four minutes from Hackescher Markt. Inside, 300 seats with red leather benches await, with an additional 90 on the outdoor terrace. The breakfast menu features ten different breakfast options, and all potato products are gluten-free.
The Hard Rock Cafe is the most famous American diner in Berlin and has been located in a landmarked Bauhaus building at Kurfürstendamm 224 since 2010. Original pieces of music history hang on the walls, and the menu features Legendary Burgers, Baby Back Ribs, and Fajitas. With a concert ticket from the same day, you get a 15 percent discount.
The Greenhouse in Glienicke/Nordbahn is the American diner in Berlin for Californian cuisine amidst tropical plants. The burgers are made from Hohenloher beef from Schwäbisch Hall, complemented by spare ribs and beef brisket cooked for 24 hours. Free parking is available outside on the B96, and inside, a new fireplace lounge awaits.
The Mariendorf location of Sixties Diner is one of the largest American diners in Berlin: over 300 indoor seats, a terrace and winter garden with more than 150 additional seats, and 15 private guest parking spaces. The burgers are made from 200 grams of dry-aged beef, the jukeboxes are flashing, and Bundesliga and NFL are shown on the screens.
Lion Burger and Steak grills its patties over lava stones that reach over 350 degrees Celsius, making it one of the few American diners in Berlin with its own stone grill. The beef is sourced regionally from a butcher, and the buns are freshly delivered every morning by a baker from Kreuzberg. The restaurant has been located on Warschauer Straße in Friedrichshain since 2015.
The Cruise-In Diner in Spandau is the American diner in Berlin with the largest milkshake menu: Around 16 varieties are available, from cherry to vanilla with peanut. The freestanding pavilion on Päwesiner Weg is decorated in a 1950s style. Payments are cash only, and free parking is available right outside.
The Flame Diner in Marienfelde is the American diner in Berlin for rockabilly fans: restored motorcycles are in the dining area, plus pool billiards, darts, and a 1950s-style whisky and cigar lounge. The burgers weigh 200 grams and come from the lava stone grill; live bands regularly play for parties.
