Park am Gleisdreieck

Located on former railway grounds between Kreuzberg and Schöneberg, one of Berlin's most visited parks has existed since 2013. Rusty track remnants, buffer stops, and birch groves characterize the East Park, while beach volleyball courts are found under the U-Bahn viaducts in the West Park. Among Berlin's parks, Park am Gleisdreieck is the most awarded.

Park am Gleisdreieck: from railway track to city park

Park am Gleisdreieck is located on former railway grounds between Kreuzberg and Schöneberg and was completed in 2013, after the area had been inaccessible for decades. Depending on the demarcation, it covers around 26 to 30 hectares. The design does not hide the past but works with it: rusty track remnants, old buffer stops, and switch parts lie in the meadows, the paths follow the former track alignments, and birch groves grow on the fallow land. The success of the concept is demonstrated by the awards received: the Berlin Architecture Prize 2013, the German Urban Development Special Prize 2014, and the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2015. The S-Bahn line divides the complex into the more urban West Park under the U-Bahn viaducts and the East Park, where the railway history remains more visible. To the south, the former Flaschenhalspark (Bottleneck Park) connects, which is now called Dora-Duncker-Park.

Beach volleyball, skate park, and playgrounds in Park am Gleisdreieck

The park covers almost everything from napping to tournaments. In the East Park, there is a skate park with paved elements and a pool bowl near the old Poststellwerk (post office switch tower), while in the West Park, Beach61 operates illuminated beach volleyball courts with courses, showers, and its own beach bar. Additionally, there are basketball, boules, table tennis, and fitness equipment distributed throughout the park, as well as the free ‘Sport im Park’ (Sport in the Park) program. The playgrounds are categorized by age, from toddler areas at Möckern- and Hornstraße to the ‘Stangenwald’ (pole forest) in the south and the playground with a railway theme at Monumentenplatz; the renovated playground at the Kurfürstenstraße entrance will be open again starting from the 2026 season. Furthermore, the intercultural Rosenduft garden and a nature discovery area for children keep the space vibrant. South of the U2, there is also a fenced dog run area between the beach volleyball facility and the ICE railway line.
