Peter Fechter Memorial

His tragic death converted Peter Fechter into a symbol. He was shot in 1962 when trying to climb across the Wall.

Hit by a fatal bullet he died at the foot of the Wall without any medical help.

The very same day citizens of West-Berlin laid down flowers and wreaths at the Wall creating thus a memorial site that has been in existence ever since. You can see the simple stele on the intersection of Zimmerstraße and Charlottenstraße, close to the Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie.
