Gedenkort Peter Fechter

On Zimmerstrasse in Kreuzberg, about 200 meters from the former Checkpoint Charlie, stands a 2.60-meter-high steel stele by Karl Biedermann. It marks the spot where 18-year-old Peter Fechter bled to death on August 17, 1962, after an escape attempt. No other Berlin Wall site makes the border regime so immediately tangible.

Peter Fechter Memorial: The Stele on Zimmerstrasse

Peter Fechter was born on January 14, 1944, and worked as a construction worker in East Berlin. On August 17, 1962, he attempted to cross the Wall into West Berlin with his friend Helmut Kulbeik. Kulbeik made it to the other side unharmed, but Fechter was shot by East German border guards on top of the Wall and fell back into the death strip. He lay there for about fifty minutes, without anyone helping him, and bled to death. He was 18 years old.

On the western side, police officers, journalists, and a growing crowd of onlookers saw and heard what was happening, unable to intervene without risking an international incident. The situation was tense after the tank confrontation at Checkpoint Charlie the year before. The case sparked outrage worldwide; angry people gathered at the border crossing and threw stones at the border guards. In the scientific list of at least 140 fatalities at the Berlin Wall, Fechter is listed at 24th place.

Steel Stele by Karl Biedermann and Red Granite at the Death Site

Today, a 2.60-meter-high steel column on Zimmerstrasse in Kreuzberg commemorates him. It was designed by Berlin sculptor Karl Biedermann, who won a competition in 1998 held by the then-property owner, Axel Springer Verlag. The stele was inaugurated on August 13, 1999, 38 years after the construction of the Wall and ten years after its fall. Previously, a simple wooden cross had stood at this spot.

The column reads “Peter Fechter 1944 – 1962 …he only wanted freedom,” and on the side facing the sidewalk, there’s a note indicating that the Berlin Wall ran here from 1961 to 1990. The surrounding pavement consists of black basalt slabs, while the exact spot of his death is marked by red granite. Every year, Fechter’s fate is central to the main commemorative ceremonies for the construction of the Wall, and a wreath is laid at the stele. The Peter Fechter Memorial is freely accessible in the public street space, approximately 200 meters from the former Checkpoint Charlie.
