Grilling Area in Volkspark Friedrichshain: 46 Slabs with Booking

Berlin’s oldest public park has the most strictly organized grilling area in the city. On the large meadow in Neuer Hain, bordered by Danziger Straße and Margarete-Sommer-Straße, there are 46 numbered stone slabs measuring approximately 40 by 40 centimeters, serving as fireproof surfaces. In 2024, their number was increased from 30 to 46, while the smaller neighboring meadow was re-naturalized and has not been reopened since. Spontaneous visits are not possible: the spot must be booked online in advance, activated on-site at the kiosk, and a grilling token, which must be visibly displayed on the grill, is issued against a deposit. A maximum of ten people are allowed per slab.

Grilling Rules and Other Activities Around the Grilling Meadow

You must bring your own grill, one per slab, at least 30 centimeters high and with a maximum grilling surface of half a square meter. Unlike Tempelhofer Feld, gas grills are also permitted here, but only solid cubes are allowed as lighters, not flammable liquids. Trash bags are available at the kiosk, beer garden sets can be rented against a deposit, with a maximum of two per group. Tram M10 stops on Danziger Straße, practically in front of the meadow. Those who stay afterward will find the Fairy Tale Fountain, the Rose Garden, and two greened rubble hills with views in the park. The public order office, park rangers, and neighborhood management monitor the grilling regulations; violations can be costly.
