Barbecue Area in Monbijoupark: Mitte’s Only Grilling Spot

Monbijoupark is the only place in the Mitte district where public barbecuing is still officially permitted. The designated area is small and located near Oranienburger Straße, turning into a race on sunny weekends: those who arrive in the late afternoon rarely find a free spot. However, the location is excellent. The park is situated directly on the Spree River opposite Museum Island, a pedestrian bridge leads over, and above the trees, the dome of the Bode Museum and the New Synagogue are visible. No one needs to register, there are no fees, and you bring your own grill.

What Else the Park Around the Barbecue Area Has to Offer

Monbijoupark is great for spending time with children: there’s a playground and, in the warmer months, its own children’s pool. Additionally, there are table tennis tables and a basketball court, so no one has to be bored between lighting the grill and carving. On the Spree bank, there are deck chairs and a small snack bar, should someone prefer to buy a cold drink rather than carry it. Supermarkets and late-night shops are plentiful around Oranienburger Straße, so supplies of charcoal or sausages are never far away. As everywhere in Berlin, the rule here is: grilling is permitted exclusively on the marked area, and in hot and dry conditions, the district may temporarily close it.
