Barbecue spot on Tempelhofer Feld

The barbecue area at Columbiadamm begins approximately 300 meters behind the park entrance on the north side of Tempelhofer Feld. You barbecue with your own equipment, at least 25 centimeters above the ground; gas grills are prohibited throughout the entire field. Those who want to barbecue in a park in Berlin without prior booking will find by far the largest area in the city here.

Barbecue area at Tempelhofer Feld: Space without registration

Tempelhofer Feld, with around 300 hectares, is Berlin’s largest inner-city open space, and since the opening of the former airport site in May 2010, barbecuing in the park has been an integral part of it. However, it is only permitted in three designated areas, located at the Columbiadamm, Tempelhofer Damm, and Oderstraße entrances. The area at Columbiadamm belongs to the north side of the field and begins approximately 300 meters behind the entrance, accessible via bus lines on Columbiadamm. No one needs to reserve, nor pay: Whoever finds a free spot sets up. On warm weekends, this is a challenging task, as the area fills up quickly.

What is allowed and what is not allowed at the barbecue area

Your own grill is mandatory; there are no fixed barbecue stations on the field. It must have a minimum foot height of 25 centimeters so that the turf underneath does not burn. Disposable grills without feet are therefore just as forbidden as open fires directly on the ground. Gas grills are prohibited throughout the entire site for safety reasons, and neither branches nor twigs or wood scraps may be used as fuel. Pegs and ground anchors do not belong in the ground; pavilions are weighted down with water canisters instead. Separate metal ash containers are available for charcoal; the general waste container is expressly not intended for this purpose. In periods of prolonged drought, barbecuing may be temporarily prohibited.
