Located directly at the Tiergarten lock in Charlottenburg, where excursion boats pass by on the Landwehrkanal, lies one of Berlin's most famous beer gardens. The Schleusenkrug combines beer garden culture with a true water view, a solid grill assortment, and a history dating back to the post-war era.
Beer Garden, Grill, and Daily Specials Right on the Water
Around 500 guests can find space at Schleusenkrug – spread across the expansive outdoor area under old trees and large parasols, as well as an indoor area that is open in bad weather. Despite its proximity to the S-Bahn, the Schleusenkrug remains an idyllic spot where you can watch the activity on the canal. In good weather, the grill station is a culinary highlight: Leberkäse (meatloaf), Merguez, and Bratwurst come in a bun directly from the grill.
The menu also offers Wiener Schnitzel style from Brandenburg pork with potato salad and lamb’s lettuce, Schleusenkrug fish soup, salad bowls, and vegan dishes. Flammkuchen are offered until 22:00. Food is brought to the table; drinks are picked up at the counter.
Since 1954: Schleusenkrug and its Neighborhood
Even before World War II, the Fistler family operated a kiosk at the Tiergarten lock. When the lock was rebuilt in the 1950s, another building was erected on the lock house, and in 1954, the Schleusenkrug opened. The waterways were managed by the GDR, which is why GDR officials monitored ship traffic in the basement, while West Berliners sat in the sun one floor above. This history makes the place more than just a beer garden in Berlin.
The Tiergarten has two large, idyllic beer gardens: the Schleusenkrug and the Café am Neuen See. The Café am Neuen See particularly scores with its location directly on the lake and is only a few minutes’ walk away. So, if you’re looking for even more greenery and water, it’s not far.
