Since 1837: Prater Garten as a Berlin Institution

Prater Garten on Kastanienallee is considered Berlin’s oldest beer garden. Everything began here in 1837 with a simple beer serving point, and from 1852, the area was developed into a large entertainment venue with a theater, dance hall, and garden. The location also has a political history: Social Democrats and the General German Workers’ Association held meetings here. Today, the ensemble is a protected monument. The beer garden is located in the inner courtyard behind house number 7-9, with the restaurant in the Berlin Rundbogenstil (round-arch style) directly adjacent to it.

Chestnut Shade, Prater Hell, and Berlin Cuisine

In the garden, long wooden benches stand under old chestnut trees, with space for several hundred guests. In good weather, the beer garden opens daily from 12 PM. Orders are placed at the serving counters and the snack bar: Prater Hell and Prater Dunkel come from the tap, along with wheat beer and natural radler. For food, there are classics such as pork hock with sauerkraut, Berlin “Bulette” (meatball) with potato salad, half grilled chickens, and tarte flambée. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, guests can go to the adjacent restaurant, which serves Berlin home-style cooking like Königsberger Klopse (meatballs in caper sauce). It’s only a few minutes’ walk from Mauerpark, which is why many stop here on their way home for a beer in the shade.
