In Wedding, near Humboldthain, more than just vegetables grow on 1,400 square meters: himmelbeet is Berlin's most renowned intercultural community garden, where neighbors sow, harvest, and celebrate together. Old varieties, fresh ideas, and a garden café with stone oven pizza make this place the heart of the neighborhood.

himmelbeet: Urban Gardening with Heart in Wedding

himmelbeet is a 1,400 square meter community garden in Berlin’s Wedding district. As a collective, the project operates two gardens: the himmelbeet garden with raised beds at Gartenstraße 77 and the ElisaBeet, a solidarity teaching garden with a vegetable field and recreational area at Elisabeth II Cemetery. So, anyone who thinks urban gardening in Berlin is only for amateur gardeners with a green thumb is clearly mistaken here. The garden offers around 200 rented plots for communal gardening in the city, and no prior gardening knowledge is required.

Gardening is done organically with open-pollinated seeds, with a special focus on old and rare varieties and biodiversity. In addition, himmelbeet regularly offers plant markets: Young plants from organic seeds directly from the neighborhood are available for purchase, including old vegetable varieties, rare medicinal and culinary herbs, and bee-friendly flowers. This makes the project one of the most important contact points for gardening tips and communal gardening throughout Berlin.

Community, Workshops, and a Garden Café

At himmelbeet, very diverse people of all ages meet for communal gardening, building with recycled materials, cooking, and for workshops on topics such as environmental education and nutrition. Workshops, seminars, and team building in environmental education and DIY are also offered, with participation and inclusion being highly valued.

The project primarily aims to enable people with a migration background and refugee experiences to feel a sense of arrival and to put down roots. Furthermore, himmelbeet is also socially active: The garden sees itself as a platform in the neighborhood and works intensively on topics of social transformation and the future of the city. Anyone who simply needs a break from city life will also find their place here. The garden café offers homemade pizza from its own stone oven and good coffee. When the weather is nice, tango is even danced. In this way, himmelbeet combines vegetable beds and community spirit in a way that is unique in Berlin.
