Visitors to the beautiful Botanical Garden in Volkspark Pankow might be surprised by the fenced-off area with vegetable beds, to which entire families flock.

In Volkspark Pankow, allotment gardens can be leased seasonally as self-harvesting gardens. If you talk to the hobby gardeners, you learn about the background of this urban gardening project. The novices are expertly guided by organic farmers who impart knowledge, for example, on how to sustainably grow and harvest regional vegetable varieties or culinary herbs themselves.

The allotment gardens in Pankow are particularly well suited for city dwellers who have little experience or not much time. You lease the vegetable garden with a kind of all-round service. In spring, new gardeners take over a plot where young plants are already set and seeds are already in the ground.

The plot is automatically watered, so you can manage with just three hours of work per week and still harvest plenty of fresh vegetables. Tools like implements are available and do not have to be carried around. This also makes the allotment gardens attractive for non-motorized city dwellers.

Parking

Parking is possible at Blankenfelder Chaussee (B 96a).

Price Level

Garden Season 2014: The annual fee is a one-time payment of 390.00 Euros or (for a small plot) 230.00 Euros. For this, one receives, among other things, the prepared plot, free organic seeds or organic young plants, irrigation, and advice from the allotment garden team.

Note

The only drawback: The allotment gardens are in such high demand that there is now a waiting list. This season, no free gardens are available in Pankow, but they are available in Mette (Großziethen).
