Where planes once took off, vegetables now grow: The Allmende Kontor on Tempelhofer Freiheit in Neukölln is Berlin's best-known community garden, an intercultural meeting place, and a green learning space all at once. Spread over 5,000 square meters, it shows how urban gardening truly works in a major city.

The Allmende Kontor is a community garden on Tempelhofer Feld, founded in 2011. What modestly began with ten raised beds and about twenty enthusiasts is now one of Germany’s most remarkable urban gardening projects. On 5,000 square meters, 250 raised beds are independently cared for by over 500 gardeners*, mainly in small bed communities. Those who want to participate must become members. Available beds are allocated every year in March or April; dates are announced via notices in the garden and online.

In the spirit of the commons (Allmende), the beds belong to the community: they are only temporarily assigned and are to be used ecologically and resource-efficiently. The garden is by no means only for experienced hobby gardeners*. It reflects the diversity of urban gardening, striving for sustainable gardening without the use of chemicals or money.

Allmende Kontor: Learning space, meeting point, and stage for all

The intercultural community garden Allmende-Kontor sees itself as a non-commercial public place of peace and recreation where people of all cultures feel welcome. Thus, it is far more than a simple community garden in Berlin: In addition to ecological topics such as compost production or raised bed construction, exhibitions, concerts, and readings are also organized, with intercultural togetherness being the main focus.

Special theme groups are dedicated to bees, composting, and dye plant beds, among other things. This way, the garden offers concrete points of connection throughout the year. The “Schönfärberinnen” (beautiful dyers) of the dye plant bed will also be cooperation partners* of the 1sqmlein community and participation project again in 2026 and invite people to jointly cultivate flax and fiber linen. If you just want to stop by: The garden is freely accessible to everyone during the regular opening hours of Tempelhofer Feld. And from April, gardeners* additionally meet every Thursday from 19:00 for the Gardener’s Get-Together in the garden.
