Wuhlegarten Köpenick: Where Urban Gardening Meets Real Neighborhood

The Wuhlegarten in Berlin-Köpenick was Berlin’s first intercultural garden, founded in 2003 as part of Local Agenda 21. It is located in the Dammvorstadt neighborhood, directly on the Wuhle river, on the opposite side of the Alte Försterei. What initially appears to be an ordinary community garden quickly turns out to be a lively meeting place. People from more than 20 countries jointly cultivate an area of 5,000 square meters here. It’s not just about gardening: the Wuhlegarten is a green, intercultural meeting place where knowledge, experience, and language exchange between cultures take place through shared use and care of the garden.

Community Garden with History and Lived Togetherness

The Wuhlegarten consists of many communal areas with a fire pit, barbecue area, a self-built clay oven, three sheds with gardening tools, kitchen equipment, garden furniture, and a workshop. On their own plots, association members cultivate partly exotic plants like fig trees or design communal facilities such as the interfaith herb garden. Furthermore, ecologically conscious gardening and the preservation of habitats for various animal species are an essential part of the association’s work. During the summer season, the Hofkirche Köpenick’s Language Café takes place twice a month in the Wuhlegarten, where old Berliners and new Berliners can converse over tea and coffee. On Sunday afternoons during the garden season and for public festivals, the Wuhlegarten opens its doors to the neighborhood. Those who wish to become a member: Since the Wuhlegarten is an association, one must apply for admission via the website. The gardening season runs from April to October.
