Sledding Hill in Freizeitpark Lübars

From Garbage Mountain to Lübarser Höhe on the Edge of the Märkisches Viertel

Lübars Leisure Park is located in the south of the Lübars district, bordering Pankow, and was created as a counterbalance to the densely built Märkisches Viertel settlement, which directly adjoins it. The site covers 39.6 hectares and was developed between 1975 and 1993. The hill in its center is not a natural elevation but a landfill that was used until the 1970s, then closed, covered with topsoil, and planted; a citizens’ initiative planted trees and shrubs. Only individual degasification pipes remain visible, and colloquially the mountain is still called Müllberg (Garbage Mountain). It only received its official name, Lübarser Höhe, on May 13, 2010, after a competition with 187 proposals. At 85.3 meters, it towers about 35 meters above the surrounding area and can be seen from afar; a circle of natural stones marks its highest point. Within walking distance are the village center of Lübars with its village green, church, and classical farmhouses, as well as the lido at Ziegeleisee. The Osterquelle (Easter Spring) on Schildower Weg, Berlin’s last free-flowing spring, is also nearby.

A 300-Meter Long Slope with Floodlights

The ski and toboggan slope in Lübars Leisure Park is 300 meters long and illuminated, allowing it to be used even at dusk – a rarity in Berlin. The same slope is used for hang gliding when the wind is suitable. The fact that the mountain is popular and often crowded when there is snow is part of its charm; it is unsupervised, tobogganing is at your own risk, and particular attention should be paid to children. Around the hill, there’s enough for a whole day: an adventure playground with climbing and slide combinations, water play, and sand areas, a skate park with a halfpipe, a mini-golf course, as well as hiking, cycling, and horse-riding trails, sunbathing lawns, and barbecue areas. On the edge of the park is the Alte Fasanerie (Old Pheasantry), formerly a youth and family farm, which dates back to Frederick the Great: around 1740, he had a pheasantry established here for the Rosenthal estate, which was abandoned around 1843. Today, it offers workshops for children and families where bread is baked, butter is made, and wool is processed, along with fields and a restaurant. Dogs are not allowed in the park. The area is accessible by U8 and bus; hiking trails lead from here further to Blankenfelde and the Brandenburg countryside.
