ufaFabrik – International Cultural Center: Where Improvisation Meets History

The ufaFabrik is one of Berlin’s oldest socio-cultural centers. On the site of a former UFA film copying plant, a self-governed cultural and living project emerged after its peaceful occupation in 1979. Today, it has become a vibrant institution that hosts far more than just theater. The 18,566 m² area includes a children’s farm, a playground, an organic food store, an organic bakery, and a children’s circus school. Anyone entering the premises quickly realizes: This is not about high gloss, but about genuine participation.

Improv Theater in Berlin: Spontaneity as a Program

Almost daily, artists perform on the stages of the ufaFabrik. The program includes theater, music, cabaret, variety, dance, and children’s theater. In improv theater, everything revolves around the moment. “Improv” refers to a form of theater where there is no finished script: The performers react spontaneously to impulses, suggestions, and situations. Comedian Masud Akbarzadeh regularly performs here. At the center of these evenings, he acts as host with 30 years of stage experience. Comments frequently say “best improv,” and together with other performers, a show emerges that is raw, direct, spontaneous, and unpredictable. Additionally, there are formats like the show “Generalprobe Weltuntergang” (Dress Rehearsal Doomsday), where the cult improv theater group Die Gorillas perform with changing guests, and the audience decides what causes humanity’s downfall. Three multifunctional stages with 90, 180, and 260 seats, as well as a summer stage with over 500 seats, are available. In short: Berlin improv theater takes place here on a site that writes its own history.
