The Top 10 Best Exhibitions to See in Berlin
In one Berlin hall, beams of light cut through fog in complete darkness, and two kilometres away thick concrete swallows every voice. Exhibitions in Berlin rarely stay on white walls: the city puts art into a former brewery in Neukölln, a wartime bunker in Mitte, the old Amerika Haus next to Bahnhof Zoo and tunnels deep below Gesundbrunnen. The range runs from contemporary photography and street art to walk-in light installations and playable consoles from four decades of gaming. Some houses swap their shows several times a year, others build one installation you can see nowhere else. If you want art and a real experience in the same afternoon, Berlin gives you plenty of choice. So which exhibitions in Berlin are actually worth the trip? For this list we walked through the city’s exhibition spaces, looked closely at how each show is staged and asked whether the ticket price holds up. In Lichtenberg, Dark Matter turns old industrial halls on Köpenicker Chaussee into walk-in rooms of light and sound that you feel your way through. At Gesundbrunnen, Berliner Unterwelten takes you from Brunnenstraße down into bunkers and tunnels under the city. And in Charlottenburg, C/O Berlin shows photography inside the Amerika Haus on Hardenbergstraße that shifts your view of the world every time. Which one will you book first?Ellen Mehrhoff-Roddewig
I would rather spend an afternoon in a small exhibition house than queue outside a huge museum, because the smaller places take more risks. For this list I looked at how each show is built, whether it works without any background knowledge and how much time you really need. It also mattered to me that the trip pays off, even when it leads out to Lichtenberg or Neukölln. The result is ten places between Charlottenburg and Friedrichshain that I keep going back to.
