There is no script, no rehearsal and no second take: at an improv theatre in Berlin the evening only starts once someone in the audience shouts a word into the room. Sometimes that turns into a crime comedy, sometimes a family drama in three acts, sometimes a contest where two teams play for points and the audience decides who wins. The scene is bigger than most people expect, with permanent houses that keep their own ensemble, cultural centres running a mixed programme, stages shared by several groups in rotation, and English-language nights for everyone still working on their German. Tickets usually cost less than two cinema seats. So where is the trip actually worth it?
For this list we sat in the audience, compared programmes and paid attention to how fast an ensemble turns one shouted word into a scene. In Kreuzberg the Gorillas have been playing at Ratibortheater since 1997, in Prenzlauer Berg the BühnenRausch is the busiest improv stage in the city, and in Neukölln the Comedy Café Berlin runs its programme in German and in English. Ten venues from Spandau to Weißensee, from competitive formats to long improvised stories. Which stage will you sit in front of?

Improv is what I book when I want an evening I cannot predict. For this list I paid attention to whether an ensemble really listens instead of chasing punchlines, whether the formats hold up across a full evening, and whether a first-time visitor can follow along straight away. How often a stage actually plays mattered too. The result is ten venues spread across the city.
In the backyard of Cuvrystraße in Kreuzberg lies the Ratibor Theater: Berlin's premier address for improvisation theater, home stage of the Gorillas, and for decades a meeting point for the national and international improv scene.
In a backyard in Prenzlauer Berg lies Berlin's most-played improv theater stage: BühnenRausch. Red velvet curtains, subdued lighting, and about 30 permanent improv groups make this place the go-to address for improvisation theater in the capital.
