Only accessible via the old Abteibrücke bridge: The Island of Youth in Alt-Treptow offers a green escape from the asphalt. A beer garden, boat rental, and an evening cultural program turn this small Spree island into a holiday destination without having to leave.

Insel der Jugend: a green break in Alt-Treptow

The Island of Youth belongs to Treptower Park in the southeast of the city and is only accessible via the Abteibrücke bridge. The crossing, planned in 1913, is considered Germany’s first steel composite bridge and connects Alt-Treptow with the almost two-hectare small island. Behind the bridge, there is water on both sides, along with old trees and surprisingly little city noise.

There are picnic areas on the shore, and a boat rental offers pedal and rowing boats. The Café Inselgarten, with its view of the Spree, is the most popular spot on the island; on summer days, you can sit there with a drink by the water until the sun disappears behind the trees.

Culture that lasts until the evening

The Kulturhaus Insel Berlin, located in the former youth club house, hosts concerts, festivals, readings, and workshops. Since 2010, it has been operated by an association that promotes emerging music and contemporary music culture, consciously working across generations.

Open-air cinema and readings ensure the island remains lively even after sunset. Access to the island is free during the day; admission is charged for individual events. For arrival, the S-Bahn to Treptower Park is suitable, from there it’s about a fifteen-minute walk through the park.
