Hundeauslauffläche Geraer Ring

Marzahn

The dog run at Geraer Ring 49 is the first public one of its kind in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, opened on July 5, 2026. Covering approximately 4,000 square meters, it features benches, waste bins, dog waste bag dispensers, and sluices for leashing and unleashing. This makes it better equipped than almost any other dog area in this city.

The first public area of an entire district, opened in 2026

The fact that a single dog run is newsworthy says a lot about the situation in the east of the city. On July 5, 2026, Marzahn-Hellersdorf opened the first public dog run in the entire district at Geraer Ring 49. It measures approximately 4,000 square meters, of which about 820 square meters are used by a dog school. The facilities are remarkable for Berlin standards because they are officially documented at all: benches, waste bins, dog waste bag dispensers, and, the real comfort, sluices for leashing and unleashing, so no dog slips through when the gate is opened. The area is managed by LangeLeine Hundetraining. In addition, there is an older fenced area in the district at Riesaer Straße corner Geithainer Straße in Hellersdorf, measuring approximately 1.2 hectares, which is operated by the Helle Hunde association and was expanded by another 3,878 square meters in 2022. Two areas for a district of this size are still remarkably few, especially since one of them is run by an association and not by the district itself.

Three more areas are still looking for an operator

The district has not stopped there. An operator is being sought for three additional locations. At Landsberger Tor in Marzahn, there is a triangular area of approximately 9,600 square meters, for which a fence still needs to be built. The Oberfeldpark in Biesdorf measures approximately 3,700 square meters, is already fenced, and has old tree stock in a listed environment. In addition, there is a green area on Rahnsdorfer Straße in Mahlsdorf with approximately 2,500 square meters. Anyone who takes over one of these areas must keep it regularly and freely accessible to the public on several days per week. However, the latter two locations are not barrier-free. There is a reason why it had to come to this: The Senate explicitly confirmed the imbalance between East and West in February 2026 but does not consider at least one dog exercise area per district necessary. Treptow-Köpenick declared in 2024 that there were no areas there and no legal obligation to designate any. For dog owners in the East, this means for the time being: either one of the few district areas or a long journey.
