Barbecue area at Blücherplatz: the underestimated meadow at Hallesches Tor

Blücherplatz is the third official and most inconspicuous barbecue area in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Grilling takes place on the meadow between Waterloo-Ufer and Zossener Straße, right next to the America Memorial Library and just a few steps from Hallesches Tor subway station. While you need to book in advance at Volkspark Friedrichshain and it gets crowded in Görlitzer Park, you can often still find space here on many afternoons. No registration is required, no fees apply, and a portable grill should be brought along. However, once a year, there is an exceptional situation here: the Carnival of Cultures occupies the entire square for four days.

What applies at Blücherplatz and what’s nearby

The same rules apply to all designated areas in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: always bring a portable grill, never light charcoal directly on the grass, and extinguish the embers with water you brought with you after eating, instead of dumping them somewhere. Unlike Tempelhofer Feld, gas grills are explicitly allowed here. Grill remnants and packaging go into the trash cans or back home with you. There’s plenty around for the rest of the day: the Central and State Library with a reading room and café, the Landwehr Canal for a stroll, and Mehringdamm with plenty of snack bars for refreshments.
