BühnenRausch: Berlin’s Stage for Spontaneous Theater

BühnenRausch is considered Berlin’s most-played stage for improv theater, and for good reason. Upon entering, visitors are enveloped in an intimate, concentrated atmosphere with red velvet curtains, subdued lighting, and the palpable, tense anticipation of the audience. The theater, hidden in a Berlin backyard, is away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

For about 30 improv groups and projects, BühnenRausch has become their stage home. The show program is incredibly varied, as a different improv group performs each time. This creates what improv theater is all about: every evening is a premiere and a final performance simultaneously.

Theater Sports, Improv Whodunits, and the Great ImproMatchTournament

From fast-paced short-scene theater sports to half-hour stories and full-length improvised plays, the program offers everything from improvised crime stories to improv in the style of William Shakespeare to musical improv shows. Spectators are never passive guests: a shout from the audience, an object, or a gesture become inspiration for grand stories or wonderful nonsense.

The annual ImproMatchTournament is particularly popular. The ImproMatchTournament is Berlin’s largest theater sports event. Since 2021, several Berlin improv groups have competed against, with, and among each other, battling over weeks to ultimately win the tournament. Eight improv groups that regularly perform at BühnenRausch participate, including Raketos, Mumpitz&Söhne, Die Improvisionäre, Notausgang, Theater ohne Probe, and Die Verstörten Wunschkinder. Those who want to get on stage themselves can also find workshops at the associated academy, where interested individuals can learn improvisation, moderation, and other stage-relevant skills. After the event, there is also the opportunity to get in touch with the artists and have a drink at the cozy bar.
