Twenty years ago, allotments were considered stuffy, but today many allotment gardens and allotment associations can barely keep up with demand and have to create waiting lists.
In many places, a generational change has taken place. Especially many young families with children are attracted to gardening with their children, growing their own vegetables, and having a balance away from office air and tenement housing.
As an example of the many allotment gardens in Berlin, the KGA Mühlenwiese/Finkenheerd in Treptow-Köpenick will be presented here as a facility with a particularly high recreational value. What is special about this allotment garden in Rahnsdorf is the possible combination of gardening with water sports. The KGA has its own small harbor, from which the allotment gardeners have access to the Müggelspree and can then sail in all directions. In 2014, the association celebrates its 50th founding anniversary.
