A first birthday with friends should feel like an adventure without overwhelming the little ones. At Klingendes Museum Berlin in Gesundbrunnen, children try out real orchestral instruments, from the saxophone to the djembe, and build their own. At Labyrinth Kindermuseum Berlin in Wedding, a team from the house takes over the group, there is a private room with a kitchen and a mission through the hands-on exhibition in which six hard-won keys finally open the treasure chest. The MACHmit! Museum for Children sits inside a deconsecrated church in Prenzlauer Berg, with a seven-meter-high climbing structure in the middle of the nave. At Minicity Kindercafé in Friedenau, the whole play world is built for children aged one to six, and with Stadtnatur Berlin the birthday group builds its own camp in the Plänterwald in Treptow. Add circus to join in at Pfefferberg, hand-dipped candles in Prenzlauer Berg, marionettes to hold in Neukölln and a private tour of the Zoologischer Garten. With the very youngest, what matters most to me is that the party is fun without being overwhelming. That's why I chose places where children can discover, craft or romp at their own pace. And because lovely memories should last, at many stations the kids take a handmade keepsake home with them.
At the Klingendes Museum Berlin on Behmstrasse nothing sits behind glass: at a birthday party the children try out real orchestral instruments themselves, from saxophone and tuba to djembe and electric guitar, build instruments of their own and take turns conducting. Five packages run from two to three and a half hours, percussion from the age of three.
The Coq au Vin children’s and family theatre plays circus pieces at the Pfefferberg in which acrobatics, comedy and theatre come together and the children are drawn into the action. A birthday begins with table time for cake and presents and goes on to the performance, with a treasure hunt in a simplified version for the youngest guests if you want one.
Studio Simboo in Weissensee is a family centre with three rooms, a small kitchen and children’s furniture, where even the very youngest can celebrate. The movement room has underfloor heating, Pikler equipment and an obstacle course, and supervised programmes can be added, from making modelling clay to a children’s yoga party.
At the Labyrinth Children's Museum in the Fabrik Osloer Straße, children aged four and up celebrate for three hours in their own 85-square-meter room with a kitchen, supervised by two staff members. This includes a mission through the approximately 1,000-square-meter hands-on exhibition, where six keys earned during play eventually open the treasure chest.
At the Kerzenwerkstatt Feuer & Flamme in Prenzlauer Berg children pull their own candles: pick a wick and a colour, dip it into the warm wax again and again, twist and bend it until the candle stands up. Twelve colours, four candles per child and the guidance are included in the price, and pre-school groups have terms of their own.
The MACHmit! Museum for Children is housed in a deconsecrated church in Prenzlauer Berg, and in the middle of the nave stands a seven-meter-high climbing structure. A birthday costs a flat 160 Euros for up to ten children, lasts three hours and leads through the house as a puzzle tour with eight stations. It is designed for children aged five and up.
The Puppentheater-Museum Berlin on Karl-Marx-Strasse has been collecting marionettes, rod puppets and masks since 1995 and lets children step behind the figures themselves on its playful guided tours. Added to that are performances for children, torchlight tours, storytelling and workshops in which puppets of their own are built.
The Minicity Children's Café in Friedenau is explicitly designed for children aged one to six, and the play world is built exactly for that: child-sized houses, a ball pit, and a costume corner. Celebrations are held with five pre-made packages per child, from a decorated table to a menu with ice cream and cake. Adults do not pay admission for a celebration.
The Zoologischer Garten on Hardenbergplatz takes birthday groups on a ninety minute guided round in a version made for five and six year olds, to lions, elephants and penguins, with animal facts, riddles and games. The guided round costs a flat 75 euros for up to twelve people, and the birthday child itself gets in free of charge.
At Stadtnatur Berlin, birthdays are not celebrated indoors but out in the Plänterwald in Treptow: three hours of hut building, tracking and stealth games, led by nature educators and expressly for children aged three and up. The flat rate is 180 Euros for up to fifteen children, and families bring their own food along into the forest.
