Sommergarten James June

The James June summer garden on Karl-Marx-Allee in Friedrichshain is a heritage-protected piece of East Modernism that, after extensive renovation, will reopen in summer 2026 as a retro beer garden with a restaurant.
Beer, Burgers and GDR Mosaics: The James June Summer Garden
The approximately 1,000 sqm premises of James June feature two separate indoor areas and the summer garden. The beverage selection ranges from draft beer, wine, and sparkling wine to long drinks and non-alcoholic alternatives. Grilled dishes, burgers, pizza, and snacks are also available. Orders are placed at the counter. In case of bad weather, the generously covered terrace area offers the possibility to sit outside. Additionally, important football matches are broadcast on a screen in the summer garden.
Since 2013 in a Place with History
The James June beer garden was only added in 2013. The building on the premises was originally a technical and dispensing building for Café Warschau, which was built in the 1950s as a coffee house, restaurant, and dance café. Those familiar with the area know that the Computerspielemuseum Berlin (Computer Games Museum Berlin) moved into the Café Warschau building in 2011, which still stands as an attraction right next door. Furthermore, not far away is Kino International, the GDR’s premiere cinema opened in 1963, which is one of the most famous cultural venues on Karl-Marx-Allee. The summer garden is currently undergoing renovation: The heritage-protected beer garden is to be restored in the 1970s style and supplemented with a year-round restaurant. The operator states July 2026 as the target for reopening.
