In Charlottenburg, near Amtsgerichtplatz, Sara & Gogi combines two of the most aromatically rich cuisines of the Middle East and the Caucasus: Georgia and Israel. The result is a menu full of walnuts, spices, and warmth that satisfies Berlin's longing for authentic dining culture.
From the Caucasus to Tel Aviv, directly to Charlottenburg
Sara & Gogi is backed by familiar faces: The restaurant concept comes from the same operators who already run Pasternak and Tsomi, as well as the Datscha bistros and the bars Gorki Park and 100 Gramm. Co-owner Ilia, who already operates the Georgian restaurant Tsomi in Prenzlauer Berg, had the idea on a trip to Israel, where he met a couple, the Israeli Sara and the Georgian Gogi, whose shared culinary culture inspired him for a Berlin restaurant. So, behind this is a clear concept: not arbitrariness, but two culinary identities that enrich each other.
The menu at the Georgian restaurant Sara & Gogi is more balanced than one might expect. Those who know that Georgian food is traditionally quite meat-heavy will be surprised that there are just as many vegetarian and vegan appetizers and main courses as there are meat dishes. Fresh ingredients, fine spices, and special aromas characterize the dishes: cheese, nuts, garlic, sauces, and various fruits. The signature dish is particularly recommended: baked eggplant with hummus, falafel, and tahini, combined with spicy plums, pesto, and coriander-tomato, called “Georgian in Tel Aviv”.
Hospitality, Natural Wine, and the Sara & Gogi Supra
The ambiance is as pleasant as the cuisine. Bare wood, colorful upholstered furniture, a separate area with exposed brick walls, blue ceilings, a golden counter, and folkloric tablecloths create a special atmosphere. The service is considered very courteous and by no means intrusive, which doesn’t feel like a given in Berlin. Additionally, there are Georgian natural wines, which are considered pioneers for the worldwide trend of organic viticulture, as winemaking has been done naturally in Georgia for millennia.
Those coming with company should also know about the Supra: groups of seven or more people receive exclusive access to the Georgian feast, where a menu is compiled together according to one’s wishes and served “family style” for the entire table. Reservations are therefore strongly recommended, as the popular Georgian-Israeli restaurant at Amtsgericht Charlottenburg is almost fully booked by 5 PM on Saturdays.
