Volunteer-Run Art-House Cinema in Moabit

The Filmrauschpalast is also a Berlin cinema institution. Since the early nineties, the cinema has been housed in the former butcher shop of the Prussian army on Lehrter Straße in Berlin-Moabit and is operated with great dedication by volunteers who actually pursue entirely different professions.

It is Berlin’s only cinema with a personal announcement before the film; commercial advertising before the film is deliberately avoided. In addition to modern heating, there is still a storage oven next to KORA, which is heated with wood to provide pleasant warmth. On cold days, you can snuggle up under a blanket on the fluffy seats. In summer, Filmrauschpalast screens films on an outdoor screen in the backyard for its open-air cinema “Umsonst und Draußen” (Free and Outdoors).

For several years now, up to three screenings have been shown daily, including matinees and new film series. In the past, the ”Schlechtival” (Bad-ival) at Filmrauschpalast was legendary, where tomatoes sometimes even flew. Now, there is the annual Favourite Films Festival in the Palast and Open Air. One evening a month, a live concert with a matching film takes place. In addition to the traditional art-house program, blockbusters like SPECTRE or MAD MAX: Fury Road are occasionally shown.

As the only cinema in Berlin and definitely a highlight, Filmrausch Moabit features a huge curved widescreen, similar to its historical model Royal Palast, relative to the size of the hall. Scope films are a pleasure here!
