Kinderbauernhof am Mauerplatz

Berlin's oldest children's farm is located in Kreuzberg, on a former rubble plot by the Berlin Wall. Since 1981, the children's farm at Mauerplatz has offered ponies, goats, donkeys, and geese, along with a vegetable garden, nature trail, and a community house made of clay. And all of it is free of charge.
Berlin’s Oldest Children’s Farm
The Kinderbauernhof am Mauerplatz was established in 1981 as a grassroots initiative: a mother-child group, neighbors, as well as children and teenagers cleared a former rubble plot by the Wall, built stables, and acquired animals. This makes it Berlin’s oldest children’s farm today. What was once a bleak concrete strip is now a green oasis in Kreuzberg. The project was built by people of different nationalities and age groups, mostly on an unpaid basis. This spirit still carries the farm.
Animals, Garden, and a Medicine Wheel
The farm is home to ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks, and geese. Children are encouraged to get actively involved: in preparing food, distributing feed, mucking out stables, or even grooming the animals. This means the Kinderbauernhof am Mauerplatz goes far beyond simple animal observation. In addition to the animals, there is an area for growing vegetables and medicinal plants, where visitors can learn more about sustainable agriculture and the importance of plants for nutrition and health. Those who explore the grounds carefully will also discover a remarkable detail: a medicine wheel of the American Hopi Native Americans, a circle of stones that can be used for traditional rituals.
Kinderbauernhof am Mauerplatz: Open, Free, for Everyone
The children’s farm is an open play and learning space used by numerous people, children’s groups, and school classes across district boundaries. It is also a popular meeting point for people of all ages and nationalities. A nature education creative circle regularly takes place on the farm, and since 2025, the farm has also been available as a space for private events. Those who wish can even take on an animal sponsorship. The entire project runs without regular funding, primarily on a donation basis and through volunteer work. The Kinderbauernhof am Mauerplatz is open in summer from 09:00 to 18:00, and in late autumn and winter from 08:00 to 17:00 – Wednesdays are a rest day. Admission is free.
