In Prenzlauer Berg, directly on the former Berlin Wall strip, lies one of Berlin's oldest children's farms: The Moritzhof combines animal care, ancient crafts, and true community on a site that has been making history since 1990. Free, open, and no registration required.
Moritzhof Youth Farm: Children’s Farm with History
As early as February 1990, the Democratic Farmers’ Party of Germany submitted a resolution to the City District Assembly of Prenzlauer Berg for the establishment of a children’s farm in the district. This makes Moritzhof one of Berlin’s oldest children’s farms, grown from the spirit of the Wende (peaceful revolution). It is located near the Gleimtunnel on the former Berlin Wall strip at Mauerpark, with a playhouse and stable building. So, anyone looking for a children’s farm in Berlin that offers more than just a petting zoo is in the right place here.
The Moritzhof Youth Farm is a facility for open children’s and youth work in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. The target group for all free offers are children and young people aged 6 to 16. Admission is therefore free. In addition, children from the entire neighborhood gather here in the afternoons: The core supervision time is in the afternoons, when children spend their free time here after school or after-school care.
Animals, Crafts, and Horse Riding at Moritzhof
The Moritzhof Youth Farm attracts kids and teens with a diverse range of activities. Various animals can be visited here, including larger ones like ponies, sheep, goats, and pigs, as well as smaller four-legged friends like rabbits or guinea pigs. Those who regularly help out even get the chance to learn how to ride on the farm. If you come regularly and diligently assist with animal care, you can learn to ride. The “Horse Basics” course, which teaches the fundamentals of handling horses, is also open to all children and teens aged 6 to 16 without prior registration.
Besides the animals, much more awaits at the children’s farm. Children acquire agricultural and horticultural skills, process products grown on the farm, and learn old crafts such as felting, spinning, pottery, basket weaving, and blacksmithing. Cooking and baking are also part of the program. In addition to the core pedagogical team, young people participating in the Voluntary Ecological Year and the Federal Volunteer Service, pedagogical interns, and many volunteer helpers also work at the Moritzhof Youth Farm. The opening hours of the Moritzhof Youth Farm are Tuesday to Friday from 13:00 to 18:00 (until 18:30 in summer) and Saturday from 13:00 to 18:00.
