Theater o. N. was founded in 1979 and was the first independent theater group in the GDR. Its focus is on theater for very young audiences, meaning plays for children of nursery and kindergarten age. Since autumn 2026, the venue has been playing in the renovated Fröbelkapelle in Prenzlauer Berg and hosts the FRATZ International festival every two years.
Theater o. N. in the Fröbelkapelle: Children’s Theater in Prenzlauer Berg
Theater o. N. has changed its venue and has moved from Kollwitzstraße to the Fröbelkapelle at Fröbelstraße 17, with entrance via Prenzlauer Allee 75. The chapel belongs to a listed ensemble that previously housed, among other things, a chapel of rest, and was converted into a performance venue by klaus roth architekten. The building is managed by Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH, and the renovation was financed by the Senate Department for Culture. Tram M2 stops at Fröbelstraße station, which is just a few steps away.
The new stage will open in early 2027 with two premieres. The first transforms the stage space into a vivarium and is aimed at deaf and hearing children aged three and over. The second is titled „The Best Funerals in the World” and is intended for children aged five and over. It is no coincidence that this particular play picks up on the building’s former use. Until then, the ensemble will be on the road with its mobile productions.
Theater from the Beginning and Solidarity Ticket Prices at Theater o. N.
Founded in 1979, Theater o. N. was the first independent theater group in the GDR and remained the only one for a long time. Today, its focus is on theater for very young audiences, i.e., productions for children of nursery and kindergarten age. Since 2013, the venue has hosted the FRATZ International festival every two years, where a jury selects international works for the very youngest. Under the title „Theater o. N. mobil”, the ensemble also tours with dance and theater pieces that usually do without language, making them accessible to all children. The production „Flip-Flop” won the IKARUS Award in 2023, and „Baobab” is nominated for the IKARUS 2026.
The pricing model is remarkable. For children’s and youth performances, children pay 7 Euros and adults 13 Euros; those with little money can purchase a solidarity ticket at a heavily reduced price, and those who wish to give more can contribute to the cheaper tickets with a voluntarily higher amount. People with severe disabilities receive a reduced ticket, and the necessary accompanying person gets free admission. Additionally, there are Relaxed Performances and information in Easy Language.
