Sicilian gelato in Kreuzberg, made since 1972 according to family recipes from Bronte. Duo - Sicilian Ice Cream stands in Berlin for handmade enjoyment without compromise: intense flavors, fair prices, and queues that are worth it.
Duo – Sicilian Ice Cream: Gelato with a Family History
It all began when the father of today’s operators came to Germany from Bronte, Sicily, in 1972 and opened an ice cream parlor. Since then, the philosophy has remained the same. Pistachios are still imported from the island, hazelnut cream comes from Piedmont, and artificial flavors are completely avoided. Milk and cream for the creamy varieties come from the Brandenburg region. This is consistent quality that you can taste.
Sicilian gelato contains less air and more fruit, resulting in a more intense flavor and a particularly creamy texture. This is a true unique selling point for trendy ice cream in Berlin. What started in Kreuzberg has now become a city-wide mini-empire, with the branch on Skalitzer Straße regularly having Berlin’s longest ice cream queues.
Granita, Cannoli, and Vegan Varieties
In addition to classics like pistachio, stracciatella, and vanilla, there are vegan options with strawberry and dark chocolate, as well as more unusual creations like avocado or “Etna”, an almond ice cream with pistachio cream. The Granita Siciliana, a type of coarse sorbet rarely found elsewhere in Berlin, is also highly recommended. If you’re also craving Sicilian street food: Cannoli and granita are offered alongside the gelato.
For those who want to dive deeper, there’s even an opportunity. The Duo Gelato Academy is a Sicilian gelateria school in Berlin, founded by Duo Sicilian Ice Cream. Courses in ice cream making and Sicilian pastries make the concept more than just an ice cream parlor. This makes Duo one of Berlin’s trendy ice cream spots that truly have something to say.
