An Excursion Restaurant by the Water that Lives Up to its Name

Lake Orankesee is located in Hohenschönhausen on the border with Weißensee. The district is known more for residential areas than for gastronomic highlights. This is precisely why what you encounter after a short stroll through the park is surprising: the Orankesee Terrassen, a restaurant directly on the lake, which you wouldn’t expect in this form here.

On the site of the once burnt-down “Wirtshaus am Orankesee” (Inn by Lake Orankesee), the new Orankesee Terrassen were built in 2017. After a resident survey, the sponsoring association initiated the project, and Mr. Kitsos and Mr. Weidemüller implemented it. Since then, the Kitsos family has been the host of the establishment. After extensive construction work, the Orankesee Terrassen emerged as a solid building, immediately well-frequented as a restaurant, café, and beer garden with a lake view.

What makes the location so special: Surrounded by greenery, the restaurant is reached after a short walk and rewards visitors with a wonderful view of Lake Orankesee. This view can be enjoyed through large panoramic windows from indoors, from the terrace, or in summer from the beer garden under shady trees. Since no road leads directly to the establishment, you can sit outside without traffic noise and almost forget that you are actually in a big city.

By the way, Lake Orankesee is considered one of Berlin’s cleanest bathing lakes. In summer, an extensive lido with beach chairs offers swimming opportunities and relaxation. So, if you swim in the lake in the afternoon, you can then end the evening directly on the terraces. The restaurant is open daily from 11:30 to 23:00.

What’s on the Menu?

The cuisine of the Orankesee Terrassen is Greek-Mediterranean. Whether crispy salads, grilled fish and meat, or a vegetarian delicacy: all dishes are freshly prepared and rounded off with a suitable side dish. The menu is pleasantly extensive without being overwhelming.

The menu includes cold and warm starters, soups, salads, fish specialties, grilled dishes, grilled poultry, lamb specialties, gratinated dishes, schnitzel, as well as Argentine beef fillets and steaks. There are also pasta and vegetarian dishes. Anyone who wants to sample a cross-section of Mediterranean cuisine should not miss the warm appetizer variation: A variation of warm appetizers with zucchini, eggplant, saganaki, zucchini balls, stuffed peppers, and mushrooms, served with tzatziki.

For main courses, take a look at the grill menu. From pan-fried pike-perch to pork fillet skewers and grilled chicken breast fillets, usually served with fries and fresh salad, the kitchen has a lot to offer. If you still have room at the end: Homemade cakes and pastries, as well as a large chocolate ice cream with a lake view, are also on offer. To accompany your meal, the house also recommends white wine, rosé wine, or red wine from its own menu.
