Children's Museum

The Spectrum belongs to the German Museum of Technology and is located in the Schwechtenkopfbau on Ladestraße, a preserved remnant of the railway depot at Anhalter Bahnhof. Across four floors, there are over 150 experimental stations on light, electricity, heat, and sound. Among Berlin's children's museums, it is the place for all who prefer to try out physics rather than read about it.

Located in the Wuhlheide in Treptow-Köpenick, FEZ Berlin is considered Europe's largest non-profit center for children, youth, and families. Across over 100,000 m² of outdoor and 13,000 m² of indoor space, a program awaits that caters equally to children and parents. Theater, space travel, a natural bathing lake, and a children's city all under one roof.

The Alice - Museum for Children is located in the FEZ in Wuhlheide and is currently showing Green Planet Berlin across 450 square meters with six interactive stations, from the kitchen of the future to the sound cave. Around 250 children co-developed the concept in ten workshops. Among Berlin's children's museums, it is the institution that has been lending its exhibitions to other museums since 2002.

The MACHmit! Museum for Children has set up shop in the de-consecrated Elias Church in Prenzlauer Berg, with the church tower clock, altar area, and organ remaining. Across 1,200 square meters on two floors, a seven-meter-high climbing shelf is the centerpiece. Among Berlin's children's museums, it is the one for two- to twelve-year-olds with their own workshops to get started.

The Labyrinth Children's Museum is located in a heritage-protected assembly hall from 1890 in Wedding, where matchstick machines were once assembled. Spread across approximately 1,000 square meters, Talentopia features seven areas, from a construction crane and a control center to a material bar. Among Berlin's children's museums, it is one of the oldest; since 1997, it has welcomed over 1.7 million guests.

Located in Neukölln, at Karl-Marx-Straße 135, the Berlin Puppet Theatre Museum houses one of the most fascinating collections on the history of puppet theatre in the city. Hand puppets, marionettes, rod puppets, and shadow theatre figures from Europe, Asia, and Africa make this small museum one of Berlin's most curious cultural venues.

The MACHmit! Museum for Children in Prenzlauer Berg is arguably Berlin's most active children's museum: instead of quiet observation, it's all about touching, climbing, printing, and exploring. In a converted church on Senefelder Straße, children aged two and up playfully learn what exhibitions alone could never achieve.

The Futurium stands on the Spree between the Main Station and the Reichstag, asking how we want to live in the future across approximately 3,200 square meters. In the Futurium Lab in the basement, 3D printers, laser cutters, and robots are available for experimentation across 600 square meters. Among Berlin's children's museums, it is the house that costs nothing and has a skywalk above the rooftops.

On a site the size of ten football fields, the Düppel Museum Village showcases a village as it would have looked between 1170 and 1220 in the Mark Brandenburg region. Between the forge, bronze casting, and herb gardens, you'll find Skudde sheep, oxen, and the re-bred Düppel pasture pig. Children aged five and up can try archery and bake flatbread over an open fire.

The Klingende Museum Berlin on Behmstraße is not a house with display cases, but a workshop for trying out instruments, where children can pick up string, wind, and percussion instruments themselves. It was founded in 2002 based on an idea by conductor Gerd Albrecht. The concept includes the Klingende Mobil, a bus with over 50 instruments on board.

Shortly before Christmas, the open-air museum Museumsdorf Düppel opens its gates for the last time in 2018 for a family advent festival.

From November 10 to December 26, 2018, the Knoblauchhaus Museum in Berlin-Mitte transforms into a Christmas House from the Biedermeier era.

The Forest Museum with Forest School is located on Königsweg in Grunewald on the site of a former tree nursery. Inside, specimens, display boards, and interactive exhibits about the forest await, while outside there's a forest garden with play and discovery stations. At 1.00 Euro for children and 1.50 Euro for adults, it is the most affordable among Berlin's children's museums.

The Youth Museum on Schöneberger Hauptstraße is a municipal institution of the district office and has been working with real objects and true life stories since 1995. Currently, Protest is running, an exhibition about historical and contemporary forms of opposition. Admission is free, and in the Open Studio, children aged six and over can create their own works.

The Puppet Theatre Museum Berlin on Karl-Marx-Straße displays figures from three centuries, with the foundation stemming from the collection of its founder Nikolaus Hein. The museum includes its own small stage, a library dedicated to puppet theatre, and workshops where puppets are built. Playful guided tours are available for children's groups of eight or more.

Those who want to spend the Easter holidays with children without sacrificing a learning effect are in the right place at the Extavium in Potsdam. The hands-on museum by the canal transforms natural sciences into a tangible adventure, and during Easter, there's even a specially bookable slime experimentation course on top.

Potsdam's hands-on museum, known as Extavium until April 2024, features over 80 interactive exhibits from physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. Children can dock at the ISS, watch chocolate kisses expand in a vacuum, and build mouse mazes. Experiment courses are available for ages 5 and up. For indoor activities with children, the short trip from Berlin to Potsdam is well worth it.
