For more than a century, equestrian sports have been at home in Berlin-Lichtenberg, in the Karlshorst district. Anyone arriving here for the first time quickly realizes: This is not a place for posers. Instead, you’ll meet Berliners who know how to truly spend a Sunday. Admission to race events is usually free. This already makes the Karlshorst harness racing track one of the best leisure tips in Berlin, even before a horse even sets foot on the track. With a minimum bet of two euros, you can participate in the harness races – and cheering for your own horse is included, no extra charge.

Around 400 races take place on approximately 40 race days a year, many of them on weekends and public holidays. This means there’s hardly a Sunday in Berlin when something isn’t happening somewhere on the 37-hectare site. The spectator stands offer protection from the weather and allow for relaxed viewing with the best panoramic view of the entire facility. In addition, there’s German cuisine and a beer, horse racing and sunbathing, or a shady spot.

History, Flea Market, and More Than Just Equestrian Sports

After World War II, the racecourse was converted into a harness racing track by order of the Soviet city commandant General Colonel Bersarin. During the division of Germany, it was the only harness racing track in the entire GDR. A good piece of Berlin’s history runs with your Sunday outing. The racecourse is now even on the state’s list of protected monuments.

But even apart from the harness races, the journey to Karlshorst is worthwhile. The large antique flea market at the harness racing track takes place at the beginning of each month and regularly attracts a diverse audience of collectors, design fans, and browsers. The giant flea market offers a mix of antiques, collectibles, and design classics, presented by more than 700 exhibitors. In addition, there are special family race days with a colorful accompanying program for children, as well as the opportunity to try out the harness driving school and take sulky driving lessons on non-race days.
