Café Bravo: Art, Coffee, and a Courtyard to Linger

Those who want to leave a boring Sunday behind in Berlin should head to Auguststraße. There, in the green backyard of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Café Bravo awaits with an atmosphere rarely found in Berlin’s city center. The courtyard is quiet, even when Auguststraße outside is lively. Breakfast is served from 9 AM, and anyone who snags an outdoor seat is simply lucky.

The pavilion itself is already an experience. Realized in 1999 based on an idea by American artist Dan Graham and architect Johanne Nalbach, it consists of two twisted glass cubes made of mirrored stainless steel and one-way mirror glass. Depending on the light, the building appears sometimes transparent, sometimes like a mirror. So, in addition to Sunday coffee, you also get contemporary architecture.

What’s on the Menu

Since its reopening, the team behind Otto, Trio, and Pluto has been running the gastronomy in the pavilion. It is open from Wednesday to Monday from 9:00 to 20:00, Tuesdays the courtyard remains quiet.

The kitchen focuses on uncomplicated, seasonal dishes. There are homemade cakes, aromatic espresso, and creative breakfast variations. The offering is intentionally kept manageable, which only benefits the quiet character of the place. Those who also want more can combine their visit directly with a tour through the current exhibitions at KW. The institute is considered one of the most important venues for contemporary art in Berlin and has been closely associated with the Berlin Biennale since 1998. So: breakfast, art, courtyard. That’s how Sundays in Mitte are done.
