Located in the Nikolaiviertel, just a few minutes' walk from Alexanderplatz, the Hemp Museum Berlin is the only institution of its kind in Germany, dedicating approximately 300 square meters to the cultural history of cannabis. Botany, industrial history, medicine, and prohibition are given equal space here, presented objectively and without moralizing.

A Curious Museum with a Serious Background: The Hemp Museum Berlin

In an unassuming townhouse at Mühlendamm 5, one of Berlin’s most unusual museums awaits. The Hemp Museum Berlin opened its doors on December 6, 1994, supported by the non-profit association H.A.N.F. e. V. It is the only museum of its kind in Germany and one of only four worldwide, alongside institutions in Bologna, Barcelona, and Amsterdam.

The Hemp Museum Berlin features eight exhibition rooms that illuminate the plant genus Cannabis from various perspectives. While its effect as an intoxicant is discussed, it is not the main focus. Instead, the diverse uses of a plant that has been cultivated for 10,000 years and continues to gain importance in economics and medicine are highlighted. From cultivation to textile fibers and insulation materials, to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, the permanent exhibition covers a broad spectrum.

Special Exhibitions and Social Debates

The museum sees itself not only as a repository of knowledge but also as a cultural actor. Thus, the house uses its basement and additional exhibition spaces for changing artistic contributions, paintings, media installations, or thematic presentations, as well as for film screenings and publications related to hemp and cannabis. Additionally, the museum directly addresses current political developments. The latest special exhibition focuses on the social and personal consequences of cannabis prohibition and the changes since the new legal regulations.

The partial legalization of cannabis for recreational purposes confirms the museum’s mission, ongoing for over 30 years, to shed light on hemp in all its facets. So, anyone who believes curious Berlin museums are only about eccentricities without substance will be proven wrong here. The Hemp Museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 20:00, and Saturday, Sunday, and on public holidays from 12:00 to 20:00. Admission costs 6 Euros, reduced 4 Euros.
