Hellersdorf

A flat in a Plattenbau, the way of large panel system construction used in East Germany, still totally equipped with GDR furniture can be visited at Hellersdorf!

The flat of 3 rooms still has its cupboard made out of chip board and a Colorett TV set. The shelf hold next to the “Hotel Guide GDR” the user’s manual for the Majomat (Magdeburg Yoghurt Automat). More genuine East German articles like Rorkäppchen sparkling wine, aprons made of Dederon or a bottle to make soda with carbondioxide cartridges can be discovered here by the curious visitors.

The monthly rent for such a flat in the 1980s amounted to 109 GDR-Mark. This was rather inexpensive and contributed to the popularity of living in such a Plattenbau.
