In Charlottenburg's Klausenerplatz quarter, where one would typically expect Wilhelminian-era buildings and coffee houses, a real children's farm is hidden on Danckelmannstraße. The Charlottenburg Goat Farm is the result of civic engagement: residents saved a derelict plot from new development and transformed it into a green community oasis with animals, learning gardens, and a playground.
Goats, Chickens, and Bees in Charlottenburg
The very existence of a children’s farm in Charlottenburg is thanks to a citizens’ initiative. New buildings were originally planned for a demolition site, but residents favored its use as a recreational space. They prevailed. Today, the Charlottenburg Goat Farm houses a remarkable variety on its expansive grounds: a goat enclosure, chickens, an apiary, learning gardens, and a composting facility. The goats are the clear crowd favorites. They respond to names like Bertha and Hertha and are happy to come to the fence when food is offered. However, anyone bringing food should know: Only vegetables and cuttings are allowed, preferably hay and straw.
The apiary is also worth a closer look. There is bustling activity in the colorful beehives, and during the warm months, the insects find plenty of pollen from wildflowers. Their honey is occasionally available for purchase directly on site. In addition, neighborhood children have built their own raised beds where vegetables and herbs grow. This is not a petting zoo; it is practical nature education.
The Charlottenburg Goat Farm: Participation Welcome
What distinguishes this children’s farm in Berlin from others is its community character. The green space is operated voluntarily by Blockinitiative 128 e.V. and local residents. Anyone who wants to do more than just observe, but actively help, is expressly welcome: young and old can assist in keeping the grounds in shape during one of the regular volunteer weekends. In the rear area, there is also a playground with small huts and an extra-wide slide. There are no costs for visiting: admission is free. The project is funded by visitor donations and by the district. So, if you wish, you can throw something into the donation box when leaving and thus help ensure that this special place in Charlottenburg is preserved for a long time.
