Komische Oper for Children at Schillertheater

Komische Oper for Children brings out at least one new major children's opera each season and performs at the Schiller Theater in Charlottenburg during the renovation of its main house. The program also includes children's concerts, family tours, and a children's choir with almost 100 voices. Children up to 14 years pay 10 Euros.

Because the main house of the Komische Oper on Behrenstraße has been under renovation since 2023, the ensemble performs at the Schiller Theater on Bismarckstraße in Charlottenburg. The house was opened in 1907, destroyed in the war, and rebuilt in the early fifties. With 974 seats, it is significantly larger than most stages where children’s theater is performed in Berlin. The U-Bahn stations Ernst-Reuter-Platz and Deutsche Oper are within walking distance but do not have elevators. Those arriving barrier-free should therefore exit at U-Bahn station Bismarckstraße.

Visitor parking is available on the median strip of Bismarckstraße, disabled parking spaces are located on the side street Am Schillertheater. The barrier-free entrance is to the left of the main entrance, an elevator takes guests to the ground floor level, and four wheelchair spaces with four accompanying seats are available in the hall. Assistance dogs are welcome but should be registered when making a reservation.

Young for All: The Children’s Program of Komische Oper for Children

Under the title “Young for all!”, the Komische Oper bundles its program for audiences between four and 18 years. For over ten years, the house has brought at least one new major children’s opera to the main stage each season, most recently “Pippi Longstocking” in Franz Wittenbrink’s version. The repertoire of Komische Oper for Children also includes “Hansel and Gretel” and “Konrad or The Child from the Tin Can”.

In addition to children’s operas, there are children’s concerts lasting about an hour, guided through the program by a moderator. There are also family tours of the house, weekend workshops, the “Berliner Sing Along” project for primary school children, and a children’s choir with almost 100 singers. The “Early Excellence!” format is intended for kindergarten children and their parents, and the “Inclusive Opera” for young people with disabilities. Children up to 14 years old pay 10 Euros in all price categories when accompanied by adults, school groups of 15 or more pay 8 Euros. Further venues of the house include Hangar 4 at Tempelhof Airport and the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus at Gendarmenmarkt.
