Freiluftkino Insel im Cassiopeia

Located in the heart of Friedrichshain, on the legendary RAW grounds, the Open-Air Cinema Insel im Cassiopeia transforms warm summer nights into a true open-air cinema experience. Arthouse meets documentary film here, Jamaican BBQ meets beer garden atmosphere – all with the raw charm this neighborhood is known for.
Arthouse, Classics, and Documentaries: The Program Impresses
The Open-Air Cinema Insel im Cassiopeia is one of the most curated open-air cinemas in Berlin. On four evenings a week, the cinema shows a selection of current arthouse films, film classics, documentaries, and program cinema highlights from the past ten months. So, if you’re expecting blockbuster popcorn cinema, you’re in the wrong place. However, if you’re keen on Studiocanal gems, international festival contributions, or high-quality documentaries, you will highly appreciate the program, which we found particularly interesting during our visit. The cinema offers up to 500 seats, making it suitable for larger cinema nights with friends. For cooler evenings, blankets are available free of charge, and in case of rain, there are also free umbrellas and around 80 covered seats on the terrace. Tickets cost 8.50 Euros, with the Berlinpass only 5 Euros, and with the Ferienpass 4.50 Euros. Children’s films are also part of the program, so the cinema is by no means only for adults. Furthermore, the beer garden invites you to linger before and after the film, you can celebrate afterwards in the Cassiopeia Club, and if you have energy left, you can even get active beforehand in the skate hall or at the climbing tower. The gastronomic offer includes Jamaican BBQ and other food in the summer garden.
Pure Friedrichshain: Location, Surroundings, and What You Can Do Beforehand
The Open-Air Cinema Insel is hosted in the charming summer garden of Cassiopeia in the heart of the RAW grounds on Revaler Straße in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Those who arrive early should explore the surroundings. Directly on the premises is the restaurant Khwan, which you can smell before you see it, serving delicious Thai dishes such as grilled chicken, lamb, and BBQ ribs. If you prefer a quieter meal, Michelberger Restaurant on Warschauer Straße is a good choice, processing seasonal products from Brandenburg into innovative, modern German cuisine. Afterwards, a stroll along the East Side Gallery on the Spree is worthwhile, the longest preserved section of the Berlin Wall, with a view of the Oberbaumbrücke. All of this is just a few minutes’ walk from the cinema, directly accessible via S-Bahn and U-Bahn Warschauer Straße.
