In the backyard of an old factory in Moabit, between brick walls and train tracks, the Kulturfabrik Moabit's Open-Air Cinema shows films every summer that are rarely seen on a screen in Berlin. Admission is free, the atmosphere unique.

Open-Air Cinema in Berlin with Cult Status: The Kulturfabrik Moabit Open-Air Cinema

The Kulturfabrik Moabit Open-Air Cinema shows free films under the stars in the Kulturfabrik courtyard. This makes it one of the few open-air cinemas in Berlin where admission truly costs nothing. Approximately 150 visitors find space here, on a mix of folding chairs and simple seating, which gives the whole thing its charmingly improvised character. Every Friday and Saturday at 22:00, current films and classics are screened.

As for the program, Kulturfabrik is clearly not a multiplex cinema. It shows genre films beyond the mainstream, Asian cinema, as well as demanding, unconventional, and challenging works that put viewing habits to the test. Thus, the Open-Air Cinema is clearly aimed at a cinephile audience looking for more than just the latest blockbuster. For those who don’t want to make their own film selection, the decision is taken out of their hands on many evenings with a surprise film. We found this particularly appealing. In case of rain, screenings are moved to the Filmrauschpalast, so the evening is not cancelled even in bad weather. The small bar offers cold drinks, including draft beer. The operation is run exclusively by volunteers, which somehow enhances the place, in the best sense.

Discover Moabit: What to experience around Kulturfabrik

Nearby are the Berlin Central Station, the iconic Reichstag building, and the historic Brandenburg Gate. So, those who arrive early can take a nice walk through the government district. It’s also worth a detour to the Hamburger Bahnhof, the National Gallery of Contemporary Art, which is just a few minutes’ walk away. For dinner before the film, we recommend Patio at Bärenbrücke, which scores with a warm atmosphere and a great view of the water. If you prefer Mediterranean, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Sapori di Casa on Wilsnacker Straße, a family-run Italian restaurant with truly friendly service.
