Every summer, the Open Air Cinema Spandau transforms the sheltered inner courtyard of the City Library in Spandau's Old Town into one of Berlin's most atmospheric open-air screens. Arthouse meets mainstream cinema here, and if you're chilly, you even get a hot water bottle.

Open Air Cinema in Berlin with Charm: What Open Air Cinema Spandau Offers

Hundreds of moviegoers have the opportunity to enjoy the cinema summer at Open Air Cinema Spandau in the cozy atmosphere of the sheltered courtyard of the City Library. The cinema has almost 300 seats and offers blankets, cushions, and hot water bottle rentals — which we find particularly charming, as Berlin summer nights can be cooler than one might think. The chairs are beach chairs, and there’s Dolby Surround Sound.

As for the program, the cinema in Kulturhaus Spandau shows a successful mix of arthouse cinema, comedies, and romantic dramas. The cinema program is updated every 14 days, offering something for every taste. So, fans of auteur cinema will find something here, as will lovers of well-crafted feel-good films. There are also screenings for families with FSK-12 ratings, so younger cinema-goers are also welcome.

So that no one has to go without refreshments: a catering stand provides visitors with hot and cold drinks, as well as snacks and small meals. A special feature of the Open Air Cinema Spandau is the freshly cooked soup daily — we simply found this great during our visit. Additionally, there’s popcorn, sweets, and drinks. The open-air cinema also has disabled access. The 2025 season runs until September 20.

Spandau Old Town: What to do before your cinema visit

Spandau is a worthwhile destination long before the movie starts. Spandau Citadel dates back to the High Renaissance and is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe. Afterwards, a stroll along the Havel is recommended, as anyone wandering through Spandau’s historic center will feel transported back to the Middle Ages. If you want to eat beforehand: Brauhaus Spandau has been brewing its own beer, like Havelbräu, for over 25 years and serves tasty German dishes in a rustic atmosphere. Alternatively, Konditorei Fester, located in the Old Town since 1926, invites you to linger right on the market square.
