Since 1993, Junction Bar on Gneisenaustraße in Kreuzberg has been one of Berlin's most reliable live music venues. In the basement club beneath the café of the same name, bands across all genres, from jazz and blues to funk, rock, and chanson, play almost daily. Afterwards, DJs take over.
Junction Bar: Kreuzberg’s Living Room for Live Music
If you’re looking for a bar with live music in Berlin that doesn’t feel like a tourist trap, Gneisenaustraße 18 is the right address. Established in 1993, this two-story club features a café on the upper floor and a basement club below. Although both areas coexist peacefully, the small “border traffic” takes place across the street, as there’s no internal staircase. This might sound inconvenient, but it’s actually part of its character. Because every night, the basement ensures that Junction Bar “The Place for Live Music” remains.
It’s located in Kreuzberg and has held its ground here for years, even as the former rebel district was long surpassed in popularity as a nightlife hotspot by Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte, and Friedrichshain after reunification. That’s precisely what makes Junction Bar so appealing: no posturing, no redesign, no hype.
Live Daily, Different Daily
The music program at Junction Bar is deliberately broad. Jazz, Pop, Blues, Brazil, Rap, and Funk are played live here; anything goes. The booking is by no means limited to established Berlin bands. International acts, such as the instrumental progressive rock trio Miguelé from Buenos Aires, whose music combines various dynamics and passages, also regularly take the stage. After the live set ends, DJs take over the stage, sometimes even with live video mixing. An evening here often extends into the early morning hours. Admission is between 3 and 6 Euros, which is remarkably fair given the program offered. So, anyone who wants to experience live music in Berlin without breaking the bank should definitely have Junction Bar marked in their calendar.
