Since 1992, A-Trane on Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg has been Berlin's most important address for international jazz. In a venue with just 100 seats, greats like Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, and Wynton Marsalis have played here. Small, intimate, uncompromisingly good.
A-Trane: Berlin’s Most Legendary Jazz Club
Anyone looking for world-class live music in Berlin cannot miss A-Trane. Since 1992, the club has been a fixture in the international jazz scene and the nightlife around Savignyplatz. The name is a tribute to John Coltrane, whose nickname was “Trane”, as well as Duke Ellington’s signature tune “Take the A Train”. The concept behind it is as simple as it is captivating: excellent music in a space that forces intimacy. The club accommodates a maximum of 100 people, who gather around the stage, which is only twelve square meters in size.
From Herbie Hancock and Ray Brown to Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, and Till Brönner, they all loved playing at A-Trane. This makes A-Trane much more than just a bar with live music. It is considered one of the most important jazz clubs in Europe.
Jam Sessions, Festivals, and the City’s Best Program
A-Trane’s program is dense and sophisticated. It is one of the venues for the annual JazzFest Berlin. Most recently, the club presented four consecutive evenings with international ensembles as part of JazzFest 2025. Album release concerts also regularly take place here. For example, the Julia Hülsmann Quartet will perform at A-Trane in November 2025 with its new ECM album “Under The Surface”.
Those who drop by spontaneously are particularly well catered for on Saturdays. Every Saturday evening after the regular show, “Jazz after Midnight” takes place, the weekly jam session. This shows what distinguishes A-Trane from other live music bars: here, music is not just consumed, but played together. Since 1997, former designer and professional basketball player Sedal Sardan has managed the club and regularly hosts the evenings. This gives each concert a personal touch that you won’t soon forget.
