Berliner Unterwelten: City Tours Beneath Wedding

The meeting point is the southern access to Gesundbrunnen subway station at Brunnenstraße 105, where the S-Bahn, U8, regional trains, and bus 247 converge. Parking spaces are scarce in the area, and the association recommends arriving by public transport. Berliner Unterwelten e.V. was founded in 1997, has around 580 members, and now manages 14 of its own, predominantly underground locations. The air-raid shelter under the station survived the war because an explosion would have endangered the subway tunnel. It fell into a kind of Sleeping Beauty slumber and was only rediscovered by the association in 1998. Above ground, nothing of this is noticeable, as the access is inconspicuously located between platforms and rows of shops. Over the years, the association has evolved from a group of amateur researchers into an institution that secures, documents, and makes facilities accessible. Lockers for luggage are available at the station, as larger bags and backpacks are not allowed downstairs.

What the “Dark Worlds” Tour Shows in the Bunker Facilities

The most famous tour is called “Dark Worlds” and lasts about 90 minutes. It leads through the preserved rooms of the air-raid shelter, where original equipment, luminous paint on the walls, and finds from the post-war period can still be seen. In addition, Berliner Unterwelten e.V. offers tours that lead from the flak tower to the rubble hill, deal with subways and bunkers in the Cold War, or explore escape tunnels under the Wall. For its work, the association received the Silver Hemisphere, Germany’s highest award in monument protection, in 2006, and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2025. A few rules should be known: Sturdy closed footwear is mandatory and checked before admission, the minimum age is seven years, and photo, film, and audio recordings are not permitted in the facilities. In several facilities, the temperature is between 8 and 14 degrees Celsius all year round. Tickets are available exclusively online; none are sold on-site. The tour costs 18 Euros, reduced 13 Euros. There are no visitor toilets in the facilities, which is why a visit before the start at the station should be planned.
