In the heart of Mitte, directly on Berlin's most famous boulevard, stands one of Europe's most significant opera houses. The Staatsoper Unter den Linden combines almost three centuries of music history with a repertoire that sets international standards. General Music Director Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Berlin are the sonic backbone of this institution.

Mall of Berlin is the shopping center located in the heart of the government district at Leipziger Platz, built on the former site of the Wertheim department store. Around 200 shops are spread across four levels and 76,000 square meters, plus one of Germany's largest food courts on the second floor. A large portion of the area has been undergoing renovation since 2025.

The Theater des Westens on Kantstrasse opened in 1896 to plans by Bernhard Sehring and combines a neo-baroque auditorium with a stage tower shaped like a medieval keep. In 1961 the German-language premiere of My Fair Lady ran here for two years and paved the way for the musical in Germany. Today around 1.600 seats fill the house.

Bikini Berlin is Germany's first Concept Mall, located in the listed Bikinihaus from 1957, directly next to the Zoological Garden. Instead of large chains, there are around 60 independent boutiques and twenty pop-up boxes that change every few months. Additionally, there's a panoramic window overlooking the zoo enclosure and a public rooftop terrace spanning 7,700 square meters.

Where the death strip once divided the city, today stands the power center of reunited Germany. The Berlin Government District in Mitte is not a museum district, but living history: the Reichstag, the 'Band des Bundes' (Federal Ribbon), and silent memorials tell stories of division, unity, and democracy in a confined space.

ALEXA Berlin is located directly at Alexanderplatz and is immediately recognizable by its red, almost windowless Art Deco-style facade. Behind it, around 180 stores are spread across five floors and 56,000 square meters of rental space, plus a food court with seventeen establishments. A bowling alley, escape room, and Ampelmann shop are also part of the building.

The bicycle tour to Wannsee is the official cycling route RR1 and covers 28 kilometers from Schloßplatz in Mitte to Glienicker Bridge. Along the way are Gendarmenmarkt, Checkpoint Charlie, and Domäne Dahlem, with Wannsee Beach, boasting 1275 meters of sandy beach, at the destination. As a one-way tour, it can be easily combined with a return trip by S-Bahn.

The Neue Nationalgalerie at the Kulturforum is the most visited art museum in Berlin and in Germany, with 608,000 visits recorded in 2025. The building is the last completed work by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and was fully refurbished for around 140 million euros, planned by David Chipperfield Architects and reopened in 2021.

Renzo Piano's Theater am Potsdamer Platz opened in 1999, seats 1,754 guests, and has been home to Cirque du Soleil's first permanent European show since 2025. Behind the 35-meter-high glass facade lies the grand staircase, and every year during the Berlinale, the venue transforms into the Berlinale Palast, the main screening location for the film festival.

At 368 meters, the Berlin TV Tower at Alexanderplatz is Germany's tallest structure. Its observation deck is at 203 meters, and the elevator takes about 40 seconds to get there. One floor higher, since June 2025, the Sphere restaurant rotates under the direction of Tim Raue. For a view over Berlin, this is the city's most central address.

art:berlin has been guiding through the city since 1991, with a team of around 60 city guides. The neighborhood and discovery tours go to Rummelsburg, through Wedding along the Panke, and to the villa colonies in Grunewald and by Lake Wannsee. For a special city tour in Berlin, this means: the route ends where most guests never get to.

The building at Platz der Luftbrücke is one of the largest in the world, and precisely these dimensions make it a recurring guest in cinema, from Billy Wilder to The Hunger Games. Tours start at the visitor center, last approximately two hours, and cost from 17.50 Euros, but the tour is not barrier-free, and rollators are not permitted.

The permanent exhibition, the Libeskind Building, and the ANOHA Children's World are free to visit at the Jewish Museum Berlin - a unique offering among the city's major institutions. In 2023, it attracted 729,559 visitors, the highest number since 2010. Menashe Kadishman's floor installation Shalekhet, with over 10,000 iron faces, is also accessible.

The WBS 70 Museum Apartment is located on the ground floor of an occupied prefabricated building on Hellersdorfer Straße, showcasing a complete GDR apartment from 1986 across 61 square meters. Wall unit, color TV, and even the salt shaker are still in place. A Hellersdorf resident, who knows the prefab building from personal experience, guides visitors through the three rooms.

For superlative attractions in Berlin, there's no way around this tower.

With eight courtyards spanning 27,000 square meters, the Hackesche Höfe in Berlin-Mitte is Germany's largest enclosed courtyard complex. Opened in 1906, it became public property after the war and fell into disrepair until it was renovated in the 1990s for 80 million Deutschmarks. German-German history is revealed here as a sequence of decay and reconstruction.

With over 10,000 square meters, the Hamburger Bahnhof is the largest venue of the Nationalgalerie and showcases art from 1960 to the present day. The building opened in 1846 as a terminal station for the line to Hamburg; train operations ceased as early as 1884. The Rieckhallen, saved by the State of Berlin, have been in use again since September 2024.

Beneath the intersection at the ICC lies a pedestrian tunnel from the seventies with orange tiles, round columns, and cylindrical ceiling lights, which has never been modernized. Production teams book it more frequently than the Brandenburg Gate or the Reichstag, from The Bourne Conspiracy to Hanna and Don to Atomic Blonde.

The Kino International on Karl-Marx-Allee was the premiere cinema of the DEFA and has been back in operation since February 2026 after a renovation costing around 15 million Euros. The floating foyer bar from 1963, the concrete relief on the side walls, and the panoramic bar have remained. For Ostalgie in Berlin, this is the place with the greatest contrast between concrete and glamour.

The former NSA listening station, where around 1,500 people worked until 1992, stands on 26 million cubic meters of war rubble. The 'Mythos Teufelsberg' tour lasts one and a half hours and ends on the viewing platform between the three white radomes. A special city tour in Berlin that shows the city's layout from above.

The Reichstag on Republic Square has been the seat of the German Bundestag again since 1999 and welcomes well over a million guests annually for the dome and roof terrace alone. Norman Foster's glass dome measures 40 meters in diameter and consists of 800 tons of steel. Two spiral ramps lead up to a height of 40.7 meters. Admission is free, but registration is mandatory.

At Platz der Luftbrücke stands Tempelhof Airport, Europe's largest architectural monument, built from 1936 as a prestige project of the National Socialists. In 1948, the 'Raisin Bombers' of the Berlin Airlift landed here, after which the US Air Force used the site until the end of the Cold War. Guided tours lead through hangars, bunkers, and transit passages.

Museum Island, located on the northern tip of Spree Island in Berlin-Mitte, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999 and gathers five historic museum buildings dating from 1830 to 1930. Visitors can see the bust of Nefertiti, antiquities from Greece and Rome, and 19th-century paintings. The Pergamon Museum remains closed until 2027 due to renovation.

On 16 hectares in Falkenberg, there is a complex made of exposed concrete with over two hundred individually shaped round columns, large water features, and a circular outdoor area of approximately 210 meters in diameter, housing fifteen dog pavilions. Dietrich Bangert designed it, and productions like Aeon Flux use it as ready-made futuristic architecture.

In the Rollbergkiez in Neukölln stands the Kindl - Centre for Contemporary Art: a listed brick building from the 1920s that has established itself as one of Berlin's most programmatically strong exhibition venues. Across more than 1,600 square meters, the Kindl showcases international contemporary art in spaces that are truly unique.
